When I first saw this adorable dog bento box, I automatically thought it looked like FK’s adorable family dachshund, Hercules. Big eyes, big ears – I just had to get it. It inspired me to make a whole bento based on adorable dachshunds!
I’ve been on a huge Japanese breakfast kick so I took that and put a little twist on it to make cute dachshunds out of the ingredients! Quite honestly, even though I was an art major, I’m not the most artistic (aside from photography) so I never thought I would have the patience to do stylized bento (a la @littlemissbento). This ended up being super easy and so cute, though!
This bento consists of:
Hot Dog Dacshunds
These are made from mini sausages. I used whole ones for the body, edges for the head/face, and cut curved potions for the ears and tails that I attached with toothpicks! These are pre-cooked sausages but you can always throw these in a pan for a bit. I used nori (dried seaweed) for the eyes.
Rice & Furikake
I used Japanese white rice for the base and put egg flavored furikake (seasoning) on top with some extra nori (seaweed) pieces.
Sweet Egg (Tamagoyaki)
This is egg that is mixed with mirin and sugar to make it slightly sweet. I sort of just scrambled it up to make it fluffier than rolling it (what is typical) because honestly, I only had 1 egg left and had to make it work. I love Japanese sweet egg and would add much more if I had the option to.
As with mostly anything I make, bento boxes are fully customizable. You can put these puppies on spaghetti, lounging on a green salad, or pretty much anything you want.
