A little bit ago I attended Koala Tapioca‘s opening party (so this is definitely a #tbt post). Koala Tapioca is a new boba and food shop that opened up in Westwood close to UCLA.
I have been to many, many boba shops over the years and honestly, my expectations weren’t high. I can count on one hand which boba shops I really enjoy and would choose to go back to and the rest (so, so many) get jumbled into the category of “mediocre boba.” A lot of places cook boba improperly and the flavors are just not there – and don’t get me started on the food at boba shops that seem to come as an afterthought.
Like I said, I didn’t expect much. I figured this boba place was geared toward students as it’s right by UCLA and smack in the middle of Westwood (a great location, by the way). I was pleasantly surprised over and over again during the event. We even met the two guys running the tapioca joint, David and Vince, who actually were UCLA grads in their mid twenties. I was super impressed at how open and sweet they were!
The layout of KT was open and modern. It felt very inviting and although the event was packed, it didn’t feel stuffy.
My favorite drink I had was the milky way. It’s pretty sweet but I have a huge sweet tooth so it was perfect for me. It’s layers of milky slush, caramel, pudding, and boba. I definitely want to go back for this.
What really surprised me the most was HOW MUCH FOOD there was! I expected this event to be much more drink heavy but there was lots of choices as far as food went – and it was good.
FK and I had a little bit of everything: the asian fusion tacos, sweet potato waffle fries, koala fries (similar to carne asada fries but with galbi on it), banh mi, and popcorn chicken. The koala fries were the most memorable and unique – I would definitely go back for that but I really enjoyed the food. Definitely a huge step up from regular boba shop food.
I am rarely in Westwood but next time I go back I definitely want to stop in and get another milky way.
